This short story Flannery O' Connor; The story is about the relationship between him and his granddaughter, Mary. The grandfather was determined to sell the land in front of Mary house for a gas station. That lot of land is where Mary and her siblings would play, and has a view into the woods. The grandfather wanted to sell the land to have an easy access to gas and food. This really bothered Mary and did not want him to sell the land. When the grandfather sold the land and made the deal with Tilman; a convenience store owner; Mary has lost all controlled. This caused the grandfather take disciplinary actions and whip Mary. This caused Mary to attack the grandfather. The grandfather in fury smashed Mary head resulting in her death.

Looking at this story with a postmodernism view. This story shows the ugly truth and the consequences of wanting to have total control. When Mary started to form her own individual and no longer submissive to her grandfather. The grandfather lost of control and in trying to regain dominance killed  his granddaughter. This lost of control behavior is shocking to the reader and makes them question if it was worth it.
